Marlcliffe Art Club

Arts week Flash animation

Y5 have been using Flash to create animations on a space theme.  The animations below involved importing images into Flash, organising them into layers and animating them along a guide line.  Very complicated indeed!

Nicholas’ astronaut animation

Run! Run! As fast as you can!

Children in Reception have been learning to re-tell The Gingerbread Man using story maps and actions:

They wrote instructions too:

And used them to bake gingerbread men of their own in our school Technology Room:

Africa Day

Children in the Early Years Phase were very busy for our Africa curriculum theme day. Mr Browns class read Handa’s Surprise and then made observational drawings of animals from the story: They also used Blackcat Fresco to draw Handa’s fruit for a classroom display:

In Y2 the children made pictures of African animals silhouetted against an African sky using oil pastels and black pastel paper:

News from Belarus!

Andrei, who was in Mrs Rogers Reception class last year, has sent us news from his new home back in Belarus:

Dear Mrs. Rogers,
We are glad to say you ‘Hello’ and to wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We are pleased to inform you, that now we are four, on the 28 of May we’ve got a boy, his name is Yan. He and Andrei are great friends as you can see on our photos.
We are very pleased of going back to Belarus, but we miss Marlcliffe with its friendly atmosphere where children are so liberated. In Belarus the discipline is more strong, but Andrei has got used to behave himself natural and freely in every situation. And his new teacher got surprised when he wasn’t as quiet as a usual newcomer, but «even put up his hand when he had something to say». I think it was a very good and useful experience – the belief in yourself — that he had carried out from England in general and from Marlcliffe school in particular. So thank you for your contribution in that :)

With best regards and season’s greetings,
Julia

And some more news about the weather they’ve been having over Christmas and New Year:

Dear Mrs Rogers, thank you for your letter. We had nice Christmas this year, but Andrei is too old and Yan is too small for Grandfather Frost (so called Santa Claus :) ). We had very beautifull winter this year, it was a lot of snow, as you can see on photo from our window. Our houses are well equiped for strong frosts, unlike houses in England. Is that true that even schools in England had to be closed because of strong frosts? Thank you for Paul’s address, Andrei will try to write some words to Kyle.

Best wishes, Julia

Thanks to Julia for letting us know how they are all doing over in Belarus. Everyone here at Marlcliffe wishes Andrei and his family the very best of luck for the future.

Marlcliffe Christmas Fayre

Our Christmas Fayre was a great success again this year and the infant library had a special guest visitor – Mr Brown says he is sure he had a meeting…

Superheroes in Y2

Y2 have been doing work in literacy on superheroes.  They’ve been studying cartoons like Billy Whizz, Superman and Dennis the Menace, designing their own cartoons with superhero themes and acting out superhero stories.  Check out the strip-cartoon of Incy Superspider – I can feel my spider-sense tingling!

Why not click over to the Beanotown website for more cartoon fun?

Light and Dark in Reception

In Reception our half term theme in Knowledge and Understanding of the World has been  Light and Dark. We’ve been learning how to use computers and the internet to help us find information. The website we looked at was BBC Science Clips – Light and Dark We’ve also been learning about the importance of light and dark in other cultures and beliefs, such as Hinduism and Diwali. Children in YR DR and YR JJB made Diva lamps from clay thumb pots. Below are some pictures of their work and the displays in the classrooms.

Poetry tree

We held a curriculum theme day about harvest in October.  Y5 wrote poems about the harvest based on the famous Magic Box poem by Anthony Wilson.  We wrote our own versions about our harvest tree.  Here are some pictures of the tree.  Hurry if you want to see it – the leaves won’t be there for long!  Click these links for close-ups of the leaves: leaf 1, leaf 2, leaf 3

Who’s been eating my porridge?

The Y5 children are starting on a multimedia unit in ICT.  Some of them have been recording using our new mp3 recording equipment.  We’ll be editing and inserting this into our multimedia presentations later on in the term.  For a sneak preview of our Goldilocks story, listen to one of the unedited versions – Blondilocks.  Click the link to hear the story.

Teachers are learners too

The teachers had a staff meeting to learn about how to teach the children painting.  Here are some pictures of them at work.

A musical introduction

Why not listen to our fabulous recording of the Please Miss song that we recorded in our singing assembly?  We did even better with our Monday Morning song.

Healthy Sandwiches

In year 3, we have been designing and making healthy sandwiches. This incorporated work in science, D&T, maths and ICT. Check out the photos of our work below. Unfortunately, Mr Brooks has yet to perfect the technology by which you can taste or smell the sandwiches….Why don’t you pester him until he does?

Children in Reception have been learning about the five senses:

And using them to search for signs of Autumn in our schools Secret Garden:

The Celts and Romans

Y3 have been learning about the Celts and how they were invaded by the Romans. If you would like to know more, why don’t you read some of the reports we produced in ICT? Click on the links below:
