BASKETBALL

Ten of our Year 5 and 6 children competed in the Arches Basketball Hotshot Competition against our local schools. This stage of the competition was held at Wisewood Sports Hall. They were the WINNERS of the local event and went on to play in the Arches Partnership Finals in January. This meant that all the winners and runners up, (from the Arches Sports Partnership), from the local competitions would play against each other.
Competition was getting stronger at the Arches finals, but our team were amazing. After winning their league table they then went on to win the semi-final. The finals game was extremely tough but the determination and teamwork out-played our opponents and Marlcliffe won with a golden basket. The children now had to do it all again, but this time at the Sheffield City Finals.
The final stage of this competition was played in March at the Sheffield Institute of Sport. The top eight elite Sheffield teams battled through two very difficult leagues. Marlcliffe made it through to the semi-finals winning their league against Parson Cross, Deepcar and Birley Spa. Unfortunately we could not will this evenly matched game and lost 8-6. A massize well done on achieving 3rd place.
Congratulations to St Catherines for winning the overall competition.
SWIMMING
Hillsborough Leisure Centre hosted a School Swimming Gala in March.
28 children from Marlcliffe were selected to represent our school. The children were mixed ability and chosen from Years 3 and 4.
There were 7 schools in total all from the local area, and our school swimming team finished in 1st place. They now go on to the Sheffield City Finals at Ponds Forge later on this year.
ATHLETICS

The Year 6 athletics squad worked extremely hard in the Arches qualifying heats held at Wisewood Sports Hall. Our team consisted of 10 girls and 10 boys, competeing against four other local schools. They WON the competition which was held on two separate nights. Following finishing in first place the team then went on to compete in the Arches Partnership Athletics Finals.
This second stage was held at Hillsborough Leisure Centre in January.  They competed against the 12 top schools in the Arches Partnership.  Following great encouragement from their team mates the squad od 20 performed amazingly well and finished a fabulous 2nd place, beaten by Nethergreen.  The top two teams then went on to the Sheffield City Finals.
Due to their brilliant performance they were also invited to the County Finals to compete against the top schools in South Yorkshire.
FOOTBALL

In November we entered a Year 6 7-a-side boys football tournament, competing against 4 other schools in Sheffield. On winning the event we progressed to the Sheffield Schools Finals. This was held at the Sheffield United Training Academy. Following our residential trip to Kingswood the boys fought hard in each match but unfortunately suffered two defeats in their first two games. Despite this they managed to keep their heads up and performed amazingly in their final game to win 2-1 against a very good team.

The Gordon Banks Sport for Development and Peace Football Tournament – sponsored by S.I.E.
A squad of eleven boys and one girl from Years 5 and 6 were taken to a brand new competition at the Sheffield United Training Academy.
The format of the competition was World Cup style. We were draw in Group B representing Mexico. On qualifying through the group stages we played France, winning the quarter-finals 2-0. Progressing through to the semi-finals we were drawn against Ghana, but unfortunately we were eliminated by a fantastic free-kick just before the final whistle. The score being 1-0.
The children, and grown-ups alike were in ore of the legend Gordon Banks, who kicked off the semi- finals and then presented medals to the four teams.
It was a fantastic day out and the children should be very proud of their achievement.
TABLE TENNIS

A fantastic new opportunity to enter a Year 5 Table Tennis competition was offered to us by the Arches Partnership. Six children we taken to Myers Grove School for a festival with 5 other local schools.
The team performed remarkably, and came a fantastic 2nd place.
